McLean Family Fun This Fall

Summer, the time of year when families spend time together (no homework, sports, the daylight lasts into the night) is coming to an end again. Every year, families pack up the deck furniture and slug away to the fall routine, missing the time spent together. Back to school items have been in the stores since Independence Day, and the sun is setting earlier every evening. What can a family do to carry the summer feeling through the year? Especially when everyone is watching their budget and a night at the movies can run $100 if you include snacks?

Here in McLean, there are terrific opportunities for families to spend time together, inexpensively, and joined in fanatic frenzy. Where can this family fun be? It is all right here, in your community! For $5 a ticket (seniors are free), your family can enjoy an evening of sports rooting for the Home Team! Who needs professional sports when your kids can run into the local hero at the Giant? Going to the High School games is always so much fun; see the neighbors and root for the team, whether a McLean Highlander or Langley Saxons fan. There is something for everyone; football, volleyball, cheerleading, golf, field hockey and cross country in the fall. Do your kids need a hero? These local athletes strive for good grades, volunteer, and are happy to talk to their youngest followers and encourage them. Follow the local teams and inspire your kids dreams about the day they will be in High School; no movie will be as much fun or star so inspiring!

There are so many choices when attending local games. Not everyone is a football fan; both schools have competitive Field Hockey, Volleyball, Golf, and Cheerleading available in the fall. Don’t limit yourself to crowded Varsity Games either, the freshman and JV games are exciting and the crowds more intimate and the times are earlier for those who have early bedtimes. Nothing feels as good as rooting for the home team, “if they don’t win, it’s a shame!”

McLean High School games start before school begins.  Volleyball’s first games will take place on Monday, August 29th with the freshman team at 5, JV at 6 and varsity at 7:15.  The games and times are all on the online calendar. The first home varsity football game is September 1 at 7:30 pm. Don’t miss bringing the family out for Field Hockey; even though the games are early, MHS Field Hockey team went to States last year and are exciting to watch!

Langley High School games also are getting underway. The Field Hockey team is planning its Bulldog Tournament on August 26th at home. Boy’s freshman football starts its season on August 31st at 6pm, followed by JV football at 7:30. Their schedule is also available on the online calendar. Both schools rely on their Athletic Booster Clubs to support athletics. Support the Boosters by getting your game gear and enjoying a hamburger or hotdog fresh from the grill.

The regular season varsity football ends with the RIVALRY of the town. Save the date now – November 4th is the Highlander VS the Saxons at McLean High School. Pre-game fun begins with Senior Night Recognition for McLean, a chance to say goodbye to the class of 2012 football heroes. Halftime will be exciting with McLean High Schools very first Hall of Fame Induction! Come and see the pride of the Highlanders; coaches and players chosen for the first induction. Included is our very own Eric Dorsey, the most recruited football player to ever grace McLean, who went on to play for Notre Dame and the NY Giants. Other inductees are MHS Favorites;  Roger Cole (former coach/AD), Warren Harvey (longtime community contributor), Cricket Call (former coach/Administrator), Ted Pease (former coach), Mary Lou Carroll (former coach), Eric Dorsey (MHS '82), Marsha Brinkley Ehrsam (MHS '79 and former coach), Marcia McDermott (MHS '83), Seth Greisinger (MHS '93), Ellen Fox Dubrow (MHS '83), Jason Johnson (MHS '93), Ed Ryan (MHS '71), 1986 State Champion Field Hockey Team, Craig Fielder (MHS '84), Nate Friends (MHS '91).

See you at the next Home Game!
