 McLean, Virginia – The Safe Community Coalition (SCC), together with the McLean High School (MHS) PTSA and the MHS Athletic Boosters, will present a panel discussion on “Success and the Student Athlete” that will be moderated by USA Today sports columnist, Christine Brennan on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 7pm at McLean High School located at 1633 Davidson Road in McLean, VA.

Panelists invited to share their perspectives and to engage the audience in a community conversation include:

·         Moderator and USA Today Sports Columnist, Christine Brennan;

·         Jacki Kleger, McLean High School Student and Varsity Lacrosse player;

·         Chuck Katis, Langley High School Student and Swimmer;

·         Frank Kolencik, , VP at 1st Portfolio Lending, McLean Youth Football and Langley HS JV Coach and Parent;

·         Kitty Phillips, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Personal Fitness Trainer at Starting Block Fitness; and,

·         William Curran, Fairfax County Public School Director of Student Activities and Athletics.

Parents and students from the entire community are invited to attend and discuss the benefits of participating in recreational and varsity sports; share tips on how to thrive as a student athlete and how to curb the role that drugs and alcohol play in the sports culture, both in celebrations and in using so-called performance-enhancing drugs and supplements.

“Sports and academics is an issue that affects all families and having an opportunity to talk about this subject with a broad range of people with expertise on sports, academics, stress and future success, helps everyone in the community,” said SCC Executive Director, Nyka Feldman. “With her experience interacting with and covering the amateur and professional sports world, Ms. Brennan is uniquely qualified lead the Safe Community Coalition Success and the Student Athlete panel discussion. We are honored to have her participation.” 

Sports Equipment Exchange and Collection for Tornado-damaged School

In conjunction with this event, the MHS Athletic Boosters will facilitate a sports equipment exchange for gently used gear to trade or sell.  In addition, there will be a separate collection of donated sports equipment for the tornado-damaged Page Middle School in Gloucester, VA. The exchange and collection will take place from 5:30pm until 6:30pm, immediately before the panel discussion.
