FCPS Families, Employees Support Beginning School Before Labor Day

From Fairfax County Public Schools:

A majority of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) families and employees support opening schools one week before Labor Day, beginning with the 2012-13 school year, as indicated in a recent FCPS survey.

“There are several reasons to open schools before Labor Day, the most important of which is to provide additional instructional time for teachers and students before Standards of Learning (SOL) testing takes place,” said FCPS Superintendent Jack D. Dale.  “Our parents and employees are solidly behind making this change.  It’s time for the state to address the wishes of our community to start school earlier.

Local Animal Hospital Offers Children Hands-On Celebrations

Local Animal Hospital Offers Children Hands-On Celebrations

From Old Dominion Animal Health Center:

McLean, VA: Old Dominion Animal Health Center (ODAHC) offers animal-loving kids the unique opportunity to celebrate their birthdays in “real” veterinary style.  ODAHC’s “Animal House Parties” open the hospital for the children’s exploration of every aspect of pet care.  They witness everything from cleaning dogs’ and cats’ teeth, viewing a variety of exotic x-rays, listening to a dog’s heart and seeing it beat in “real time” with an ultrasound, and viewing skin cells under a microscope, all while being guided through the hospital facility by a certified veterinary nurse.  Parties are approximately 2 hours long and can be customized to incorporate the child’s specific areas of interest in the animal world.
