Farmers Markets Remain Open Well Into The Fall

The days are getting shorter and going back to school is now a reality, but the wonderful farmers markets that bring fresh produce and delicious, farm-made products to your neighborhood remain open.  In fact, fall is one of the best times to enjoy the bounty of these local markets found throughout Fairfax County.

 

Park Foundation Announces Eakin Philanthropy Award Recipients

The Fairfax County Park Foundation announced the 2011 recipients of the Eakin Philanthropy Awards honoring Craig and Belinda Stevens for their generous financial support of numerous Park Foundation projects and initiatives including open space land preservation, trail construction, Lee District Park improvement and completion of the fully-accessible Liberty Swing at Clemyjontri Park.  Over the past six years, Craig Stevens has also served in a leadership role on the Park Foundation Board. Also selected for this honor was Cox Communications, a generous benefactor for many years during which they supported summer camps, the development of Clemyjontri Park and the Park Authority’s highly popular Summer Entertainment Series.

There's No Such Thing as a Free...Game?

There may be no such thing as a free game of pickup soccer in Fairfax County after a new permit policy is put in place.  Previously, permits were only required for groups of 20 or more players. The new policy, which was approved earlier this week, requires groups of 20 or more to submit a $5.50 fee for each participant, including spectators.

Local soccer players like Danny Arnez and Greg Pedersen, who play at noon daily at Pentagon City’s Virginia Highlands Park did not know about the change and were not pleased after learning about it.

Fresh, healthy food is easier to get than ever as more and more farmers’ markets are popping up across the region. Cheryl Harris of The Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine is registered dietitian and nutritionist. She’s a big fan of local farmers’ markets, and today she bought some fresh peaches, rosemary, and lemongrass from a popular market in Fairfax County

“A lot of things at the market, the farmers picked this morning. You also have a much more extensive variety,” said Harris at the McLean Farmers’ Market.

Since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association  (NRPA) has celebrated National Park and Recreation Month in July. Throughout the month NRPA promotes the importance of parks and recreation in establishing and maintaining healthy lifestyles and communities. This year, July has five weekends, leading NRPA to challenge people to visit local parks on five consecutive weekends. Anyone interested in creating healthy weekend habits is encouraged to sign the Five in July Park Pledge.
