West Potomac Academy Fashion Design Instructor

From Fairfax County Public Schools:

Maggy François, West Potomac Academy Fashion Design instructor, is one of 15 individuals from nonprofit organizations to be featured in Shoot for Change’s black and white photo exhibition on Wednesday, November 16, at the L2 Lounge in Washington, D.C. West Potomac Academy is one of six high school academies in Fairfax County Public Schools.

Featuring photographs by Walter Grio—who has been working with West Potomac Academy Fashion Design students for the past few years to build their professional portfolios—the show features nonprofit leaders who have been transformed to look like classic movie stars. Each of the participants has also written an essay on what inspires him or her to do what he or she does and to keep doing it.

Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the West Potomac Academy Fashion Design program and other nonprofit organizations that were invited to participate.

5 Things You Can Do with a Nursing Degree

Nursing, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, remains one of the most in-demand jobs across the nation. With excellent job opportunities, 2.6 million jobs in the field, and an above-average salary of around $62,000 per year, the field has a lot to offer. What most people are not aware of is all the variety the field offers to a person with a degree in nursing. Opportunities abound for choosing specialties and finding a variety of things to do with a nursing degree.

“Many people who think of nursing degrees picture one specific role that is open to them,” explains Pam McCullough, the director of the nursing program at Stratford University’s Woodbridge campus (www.stratford.edu). “People are often surprised at the variety that is available. In nursing, there is truly something for everyone.”

For many years, FCPS has sought candidates who are not only great art teachers but also excellent artists. Today there are more than 350 art teachers in FCPS, many of whom continue to create art while sharing their expertise with students. Thirty artist-teachers, represented by 46 artworks, will be featured in the exhibition. FCPS Encourages Students to Adopt 9-5-2-1-0

From Fairfax County Public Schools:

As part of its 2011-12 school year goals to encourage good nutrition and physical activity among students, Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is promoting the 9-5-2-1-0 program in October. This program promotes 9 hours of sleep, 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, 2 hours of screen time, 1 hour of physical activity, and 0 sugary drinks for elementary school-age students each day.

In conjunction with the 9-5-2-1-0 campaign, FNS is introducing students to new fruits and vegetables and purchasing locally-grown seasonal produce whenever possible to serve in schools. These activities complement the Give Me 5! Colors That Jive! nutrition message that encourages students to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables of different colors in order to get proper nutrition. FNS is also working with schools to use produce that is grown in school gardens in school menus.
